The genus Aphaenogaster in the Iberian Peninsula

Two subgenera and ten species are present in the Iberian Peninsula: Aphaenogaster (s. str.) y Attomyma.

Aphaenogaster Attomyma
Aphaenogaster gibbosa Aphaenogaster cardenai
Aphaenogaster iberica Aphaenogaster dulcineae
Aphaenogaster senilis Aphaenogaster splendida
Aphaenogaster SPA-01 Aphaenogaster subterranea
Aphaenogaster striativentris

Regarding their distribution, these species can be considered as:

North-Mediterranean
Mediterranean
Ibero-Magrebian
A. subterranea
A. splendida
A. gibbosa
A. cardenai

A. senilis
A. dulcineae

A. iberica

A. SPA-01

A. striativentris

Other species have been cited, but we consider their presence as doubtful and they should be found again before including them in  the Iberian fauna. In almost every case, they are citations from XIX century, restricted to Algeria and Tunisia.

  • Apahenogaster campana. Cited form the Balearic Islands in Emery and Forel's catalogue in the XIX century. As far as we are concerned, this citation is not based on any specimen, and may be an error. Its present distribution is restricted to South Italy, thus we consider it not present in the Iberian Fauna.
  • Aphaenogaster crocea. Cited from Gibraltar in the XIX century. ITs present distribution is restricted to Algeria and Tunisia. Not cited again since 1890.
  • Aphaenogaster leveillei. Similar case to A. crocea. Cited from Gibraltar and Portugal.
  • Aphaenogaster strioloides. Cited from Sevilla (South Spain) by Forel in 19th century. Its distributions seems to be restricted to East Algeria.
  • Aphaenogaster testaceopilosa canescens. Cited from Granada by Forel in 19th century. Again, its distribution is North Africa (Algeria and Tunisia).
